Proud Papa Displayed on TigerWoods.com

June 26th, 2007

All things Tiger Woods can be found on his personal website at www.tigerwoods.com. Including of course his new daughter named Sam Alexis Woods. She will be breaking hearts sooner than later. The first broken heart goes to the torunament committee at the Buick Open who will have to run their event without the pull of Tiger Wood’s ratings machine. I am sure they are hoping that Tiger only has a couple of kids.

Further Internationalization of the U.S. Open Continues

June 18th, 2007

Angel Cabrera’s win in yesterday’s U.S. Open at Oakmont was great theater and golf as well. There you had the free swinging, hard hitting Cabrera standing, not waddling like a duck, tall against arguably the two toughest Americans: Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk. The shot Cabrera hit on 15 was amazing, but then shortly thereafter, Tiger smokes one right over the top of the pin. Wow! And how about Furyk’s 3 birdies in a row. And did I actually hear the announcers say that number 17 played as the 3rd hardest hole of the week? If so, then what about making courses shorter. Don’t hear much uproar for that.

Oakmont was tough, but fair as everyone attested to. Tiger could have won with just mediocre putting, but he needed more to keep the trophy form going south for the 4th consecutive year.

Well done Angel!

Will Monty Mount Charge at Oakmount, er Oakmont?

June 14th, 2007

Sorry about that, but it is US Open craziness time. The time to let the USGA wreck a golf course and a golfer’s psyche. A time to allow the rest of to wonder if we could have salvaged a bogey when the rich and famous make a double.

So here’s to:

  • Brown “greens” making the visuals on your HDTV appear to need adjustment.
  • 288 yard par 3’s, or is it a drivable par 4?
  • Bunkers deepened just because they can.
  • 3 putts and 4 putts

And all of the other zaniness attributed to the US of GA.

And sorry to Monty too, this isn’t the Ryder Cup. Now if you could convince yourself that it is the Ryder Cup, I’d be looking for a bookie in England and putting money on you.

The Genesis of “Rule 88″ that Almost Got Michelle Wie

June 11th, 2007

I kow this is late, but when Wie was struggling with her game, I didn’t read about how the 88 rule got started. I found this thanks to my new newspaper; The Rocky Mountain News (great paper and almost asgood a comic section as the Dallas Morning news, I still need to know that Prince Valiant can save fair Aletha). This was reprintedthrough the AP, but good read nonetheless:

“The history of the infamous Rule 88

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — The LPGA Tour probably didn’t have Michelle Wie in mind when it created a policy that bans for one year any non-tour member who can’t break 88.Barb Trammell, the longtime chief rules official for the LPGA until leaving last year, traced the policy to 1990 when players from the Teaching & Club Pro division competed in tournaments. Some of them struggled, and it became a problem for regular tour members. She recalled two situations that led to what is now known as the “88 Rule.”

“We had a T & CP player in the field who shot 100-plus, and for the players who were paired with her, it was a distraction, as you can imagine,” Trammell said. “The second time, it was a tour player paired with a T & CP player, who made the turn in 52 or 53. The tour player said, ‘Either you’re going to withdraw or I am.’ And the tour player withdrew at the turn.”

That’s when players went to the LPGA board, and the policy was adopted.

Alice Miller, the tournament director of the LPGA Championship and a former player, was involved in the rule. She played with Lori Garbacz and a teaching pro in Minnesota one year. The teaching pro failed to break 100, returned the next day and was on her way to triple digits again when Miller suggested they all withdraw and have lunch.

“She wanted to keep playing,” Miller said. “Lori hit one shot and said, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ So I kept playing. For a while, they were calling it the ‘Alice Miller Rule.’”

Trammell said the LPGA landscape has changed significantly since then, even when teaching pros play sparingly on the LPGA.

“All their playing abilities are much stronger, much better, than they were 15 or 20 years ago,” Trammell said. “It was never much of an issue. But I don’t think at the time the rule was instituted that anybody contemplated a situation like Michelle Wie.”

Wie flirted with an 88 in her 2007 debut on the LPGA Tour when she abruptly withdrew at the Ginn Tribute with two holes remaining.

The tour waived “Rule 88″ last year for 13-year-old Dakoda Dowd, given an exemption to fulfill a wish for her dying mother. It has been applied twice already this year. Ana Laura Gomez opened with an 88 in the Corona Morelia Championship and did not return, and MacKinzie Kline, the 15-year-old who was allowed to use a cart and oxygen because of a congenital heart defect, had an 89 in the second round of the Ginn Tribute.”

Woody Austin Overhauls the Field in Memphis (Including Adam Scott) with Incredible 62

June 11th, 2007

Woody, as in journeyman, Austin wins the St. jude with incredible 62 on a really good course no one else could tame on Sunday.

Adam Scott continues to float in the last round. You can’t call it a collapse when someone posts a 62 at you, but please 2 weeks in a row. While he may not have won without posting a good score on Sunday, he alone had the opportunity to put pressure on Austin, and didn’t. Everyone likes to compare Scott to Tiger Woods, but give me a break. He doen’t have the “inside” game Tiger does and will always be a pretender unless he finds the key.

Petterson Avoids Meltdown, Plays Brilliantly and Wins LPGA Tournament

June 11th, 2007

Just 10 weeks ago Pettersen had a semi-monumental breakdown in another LPGA major. She turned it around this time to record a well deserved victory. Michelle Wie finishes dead last, and thankfully it is a non-story.

Tiger Wood’s AT&T National Tournament at Congressional Rounding into Shape

June 7th, 2007

If I was earning more money because of the influence of one person in my industry, I would bust a gut to be associated with that person any way I could. I think that is where PGA golfers find themselves when given the chance to play the new summer tournament where Tiger, who is already King of the PGA tour, will anoint a new era in golf personality marketing. And, like he doesn’t deserve it. I say Tiger for President. But he probably wouldn’t want to take a cut in pay.

“Vijay Singh, K.J. Choi and Fred Funk plan to play in Tiger Woods’ new event, the AT&T National.

Singh’s addition Wednesday was a key boost for Woods, who last week said he was having a difficult time getting top golfers to commit for the July 5-8 tournament at Congressional Country Club. The tournament was added to the PGA Tour calendar in March, after most players had set their schedules for the year.

Singh, ranked No. 6 in the world, has won three majors and has two victories this year on the tour.

Top 10 golfers Jim Furyk and Adam Scott have also said they will play. However, marquee names Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els are expected to skip the event.

There’s Hope for All of Us Hackers: 7 Year Old Records Hole in One

June 7th, 2007

You heard it right a 7 year old had a hole in one.

I was 25 years old when I had my one and only hole in one, boy was that fun. I’ve seen 3-4 hole in ones since them in various tournaments I have played in over the years, but I can’t even imagine being 7 years old and recording my first.

But as great as the accomplishment of young Mr. McGarry, the Rocky Mountain News published this morning the second hole-in-one by 7 year old Elizabeth Wang. As soon as I get this electronically I’ll post it.

Here is the story about Ryan McGarry, click here.

PGA Pros as Sex Objects, You Read it Here… Second

June 6th, 2007

I do think Adam Scott is an incredible golf talent, but a full on female sex object, WOW. But as reproted on no less a site than PGA.com:

“A woman next to the tee, instead of watching the flight of his ball down the middle of the fairway, never took her eyes of Scott. She didn’t even watch where his ball went.

There was another woman in a blue sun dress who staked out her position next to the ropes by where the players exit the 14th green. She studied him top-to-bottom as he walked away, and based on her expression, she approved.

Than came the college-aged woman alongside the ropes about 30 yards short of the 18th green.

”Right here,” she said. ”I want him to hit it right here.”

Uh, pretty sure she wasn’t talking about Rod Pampling.

Scott is used to this. Years ago at the PGA Championship, women were handing their hotel keys to security officials, asking them to give it to the dashing young Aussie. And in a recent magazine survey, when Maria Sharapova was asked to list her dream doubles partner, Scott made the list with this salacious twist: ”A night match.”

For the entire article, click here.

I really think it’s only his cute Aussie accent that makes it happen for the ladies. Go figure it out yourself, I only report it.

More Wie Intrigue

June 6th, 2007

Read this great article from Ron Sirak about Michelle Wie’s recent on and off course confrontations with LPGA tour officials, pro-am partners, women professional golfers and virtually the entire right side of the planet.

It seems that Wie knows all of the “rules” and sees herself as a non-LPGA member and maybe better able to exploit situations to her benefit. It’s almost like besides her monther, father , her sports psycologist and of course David Leadbetter giving her advice, that she must have a lawyer handy to make sure she can bend but not break the rules other women’s professional golfers live by.

Frankly it is getting so ridiculous that the only way she will ever shut everybody up is to win, and she seems far away from that.
